Festivals: Anniversary of the founding of Lima (18th January): plenty of civil-cultural activities take place such as parades, singing and fireworks.

Wine Grape Harvest Festival (March): this takes place in the tradicional district of Santiago de Surco and includes activities like the election of a Harvest Queen and visits to wineries for wine-testing sessions.

National Peruvian Paso Horse Show (April): an ocasión to g oto Mamacona (Lurin) and admire the wonderful specimens and characteristic steps of the Peruvian Paso Horse.

 Independence Day (28th and 29th July): The celebrations includes a military parade in the Campo de Marte and the Te Deun in the Catedral atended by the main gobermental authorities. In Miraflores, the days befote 28th July, There is colorful parade with flotas and fireworks.

Santa Rosa de Lima (30th August): Religious celebration that recalls the life and miracles of the Saint o Lima. Pilgrimages to her sanctuary take place which the pilgrims toss letters of hope into the well where Santa Rosa threw the key to her belt.

Lord of Miracles Month (October): Lima`s most important festivity. It is celebrated around the image of a crusified Christ that is a replica of a mural painted in the 18th century in the slaves´ quarter of Pachamamilla. The image is carried on a silver litter through the streets and accompanied by thousands of followers from all parts of the country and also from abroad. The old Acho bullring is the scene o fan important bullfight season in October.

Peruvian Music Day (October): Since the 1940´s, this celebration highlights the importante of the Peruvian Creole music with remembrances, concerts, and parties in private and public locations. The “peñas” are the most frequented public establishments.

 

Gastronomy: there are excellent restaurants in Lima for internacional cuisine and local varieties many Italian, French and Chinese dishes.

First Courses: Cebiche: bite-size pieces of raw fish marinated in lemon juice, onion and aji chilli pepper, garnished with corn on the cob and sweet potatoe.

Escabeche: a cold dish or fried fish or chicken marinated in vinegar and then steamed with generous servings of onion.

Causa limeña rellena: a cold dish of thichly Meshed yellow potatoes seasoned with aji chilli pepper and lemon, and then stuffed with tunafish, chicken or vegetables.

Soups: Parihuela: a concentrated broth of fish and sellfish.

Main dishes: Lomo Saltado: sciled beef sautéed with onion and tomato, mixed in with fried potatoes, and served with rice.

Aji de Gallina: diced chicken in a thick sauce of milk, chesse, aji chilli pepper and nuts, also served with white rice.

Desserts: Mazamorra Morada: sweet purple maize jelly stewed with fresh and dried fruits.

Suspiro a la Limeña: rich milk and vainilla cream tooped with meringe.

Picarones: fried Donut shapes made from sweet potatoe and squash and drenched with carob-fruit syrup.

 

Art & Craft: Exellent quality Fol. and crafts from all over Peru can be purchased in Lima. The main handicraft markets are found at Av. Petit Thouars in Miraflores (blocks 48-52); Av. La Marina in Pueblo Libre (blocks 6-8); and the center of Lima at Jr. Conde de Superonda and Jr. Carabaya.
