The Huascaran nacional Park, in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, includes 296 lakes and 663 glaciers-as well as the highest peaks in Peru, the most important are Huascaran at 6,768 meters (22,206 feet), Huandoy and Alpamayo. It includes protected areasfor Andean plant species such as the Puta Raymondi and the qeñual tree, and wildlife such as the Andean condor and the vicuña.
The Huascaran Nacional Park was listed by UNESCO in 1977 as a nucleus of the Biosphere Reserve and in 1985 declared it a World Natural Heritage Site. Popular sites incluye the pastoruri glaciar (70 Km/42 miles south of Huaraz); Lake Llanganuco (at the foot of Huascaran) and the termal springs of Monterrey (5 Km north of Huaraz).
The large number of nature and mountain climbing enthusiasts who visit the area have made Huaraz a buzy center for tourism and nightlife.
Other spots in the Callejón de Huaylas such as Caraz, Yungay, Carhuaz and Recuay, offer confortable lodging, food and tradicional festivities.
To the southeast of Huaraz, in the Callejón de Conchudos and at 3,180 meters (10434 feet) is the Archaeological Complex of Chavin de Huantar, Vich consists of temples, tunels, stone buildings, and plazas. This site was the most important ceremonial center of the ancient Chavin culture and was built around 1200 B.C. In one of the tunels of the temple is the Lanzon, an impressive and fuerce-looking mythical figure 4.53 meters tall (14.8 feet) and carved in the shape of a giant arrowead.
The Cordillera Huayhuash lies a the extreme south of the Cordillera Blanca, on the border with the Huanuco region. Lake Conococha is the source of the Santa River, and the range includes Mt. Yerupaja (6,634 meters/ 21,766 feet), the country´s second highest peak and the most difficult to clima. The area´s most impressive and demanding trekking route begins at the town of Chiquian (3,200 meters / 10,499).
Altitude: Huaraz: 3,052 meters (10,014 feet); Caraz: 2,250 meters (7,380 feet); trekking routes run from 3,800-4,000 meters (12,464 – 16,072 feet); Chavin: 3,137 meters (10,289 feet).
How to Get There:
Overland: there are daily buses from Lima to Huaraz (400 Km. 248.6 miles) that take 8 hours; from Trujillo (570 Km – 354.19 miles) the journey takes 10 hours.
