Festivals: Festival of the Negritos (24th December-19th January): today this celebration features the Cofradías de los Negritos (Brotherhood of Slaves), who march through the streets of Huanuco dancing and showing their colorful customes.
Feast of San Juan (24 June): In Tingo Maria local bands perform, and typical dishes of the region are served.
Festival of the Sun (27th July): Province of Dos de Mayo, district of La Union; it takes place in Huanuco Pampa.
Anniversary of the Spanish Founding of Huanuco (15th August): an agricultural, industrial and handicraft fair is organized, as well as performances by musical groups and excursions.
Anniversary of Tingo Maria (15th October): the celebration begins with a musical show of tipical songs and dances of the region.
Gastronomy: Locro de gallina: a stew made of chicken, onions, potatoes and aji peppers.
Picante de Cuy: guinea pig stewed cocked in a peanut and an aji panca (hot pepper) sauce.
Pchamanca: pork, potatoes, yuca cassava, and sweet potatoes cooked in a pre-Hispanic style (on hot stones buried into the ground) and seasoned with aromatic herbs like wild sage.
Tacacho con cecina: roasted or fried banana Meshed with butter and served with beef jerky.
Juane: rice with páprika and pieces of chicken wraped in banana leaves.
Chifles: fried banana chips.
Art & Craft:
Work of straw and sisal plant fibers, embroidery of regional motifs, masks, pottery and carvings of bullhorns and leather are the most impressive of the handicrafts you will find in the area.
