Attractions: The main churches include the Catedral (1612); Jesuit church of the Compañía (17th century); San Cristóbal (1540), wich is the oldest; San Francisco de Asis (1552); church and convento of Santa Clara (1568); Santa Teresa (1688); Santo Domingo (1548); and La Merced (1541).

The colonial homes have large patios, elaborate stone doorways and walls with animal motifs, mainly pumas and serpents. The most impotant houses are the Casona Vivanco (17th century); Casona Bosa y Solis (1740); and Casona de Castilla y Zamora (1677), wich is the headquarters for the Nastional University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga.

 

Lodging: The city has hotels and hostels of up to three-stars.

 

Tourist Services: Full restaurants services in several categories and of local, nacional and internacional dishes. Transport and guided tours offered by travel agencies.

 

Minimun Length of Stay: 1-2 days for the main attractions in Huamanga, 2-3 days to take in nearby archaeological sitesand other attractions.

 

Recomendations: Visitors should take it easy when they arrives as they will need to get used to the high altitude. Eat easily-digestible food and drink coca tea (called mate de coca) to ward off high altitude sickness of soroche.

 

Season / Climate: Sunny and dry betwen April and October, rains November-March.
