Festivals: Festival of the Virgen del Chapi (May): tradicional pilgrimage to the Chapi Shrine 90 Km. (56 miles) from the city of Arequipa.

Anivversary of the city of Arequipa (August 15): The city stages an Internacional Fair (at Cerro Juli), arts and crafts exhibitions and the Fundo del Fierro, a Dance Festival, and the Internacional Competition to Climb Misti. The main day falls on August 15.

Festibal of  Santa Ursula (October 21): a very popular festival among the locals and wich is celebrated with the entrante of Capos, with firewoks displays, Mass and processions.

 

Gastronomy: Arequipa boasts some of the most varied and suculent dishes to be found in Peru.

Chupe de Camarones: shrimp chowder cooked with milk, eggs and orégano.

Rocoto Relleno: rocoto chilli pepper stufed with minced meat, cheese and potatoe.

Soltero: salad or fresh cheese, beans, onion, olives and rocoto chilli pepper.

Adovo Arequipeño: pork braised in maize beer and ápices.

Ocopa: boiled potatoe covered in a fresh cheese and peanut sauce.

Pebre: a hearty soup of a lamb, beef and dried jerky.

Sango: a desert made from wheat, raisings, Money and milk.

 

Art & Craft: Arequipa craftsmen work with embossed Eláter to make belts, desk accesories and furniture, sillar stone is used to make decorative ítems; while lamps, mailing and furniture are made from wrought iron.
